Arsenal Push for Ollie Watkins Transfer as Deadline Approaches

Arsenal Push for Ollie Watkins Transfer as Deadline Approaches

With the January transfer window nearing its end, Arsenal have reportedly set their sights on signing Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins. According to the Daily Mail, the Gunners have submitted an initial £60 million bid, which has been rejected by Villa. However, Mikel Arteta’s side is expected to return with an improved offer in a bid to secure the 29-year-old forward.

Arteta has long admired Watkins, who has been a key player for Unai Emery’s squad. The England international remains under contract with Villa for another three years, giving the club a strong bargaining position. Despite this, the lure of Arsenal may appeal to Watkins, who has openly admitted his childhood support for the North London club.

Will Arsenal Get Their Man?

While a transfer remains uncertain, there are a few factors working in Arsenal’s favor. Watkins has previously expressed his dream of playing for the Gunners, stating in 2020: “That’s the dream, to play for Arsenal one day. But, you know, it’s a long shot.” That “long shot” may now be closer than ever.

However, Villa are unlikely to let their star striker go without a fight. Watkins has been in solid form this season, scoring 10 goals in 31 appearances, including a crucial goal in Villa’s recent 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates. With the club in contention for European football, Emery will be keen to keep his main striker for the remainder of the season.

Arsenal’s Need for a Proven Striker

Arsenal’s pursuit of Watkins highlights their urgent need for a reliable goal scorer. Gabriel Jesus has struggled with injuries and inconsistency, while Eddie Nketiah has not fully convinced as a long-term solution. Watkins, with his Premier League experience and strong all-round game, could be the missing piece in Arteta’s attacking setup.

If Arsenal are serious about making a title push, adding a proven finisher like Watkins could make all the difference. But with Villa holding firm, the Gunners will have to dig deep—both financially and strategically—to make this transfer happen before the window closes.
