"Marriage Is Not a Do-or-Die Affair" – Chiwetalu Agu Warns Against Rushed Decisions in Marriage

Veteran Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu, has shared a powerful message on marriage, urging singles to conduct proper background checks before saying "I do."

Agu’s advice comes at a time when social media is still buzzing over the shocking separation of legendary singer 2Face Idibia and actress Annie Idibia. The couple’s marital woes have once again sparked conversations on the challenges of modern marriages, making Agu’s words even more relevant.

Marriage Shouldn’t Be a Death Sentence

In a trending Instagram video, the Nollywood icon cautioned against peer pressure and desperation, reminding people that marriage should be a blessing, not a burden.

“Marriage is not a do-or-die affair. If you have an abusive partner or are in a toxic relationship, run for your life.
“Divorce is better than ‘rest in peace.’ Many have stayed in dangerous marriages because of their children or because their partner is rich. But at what cost?
“A lady was recently burnt to death by her husband. Now, who will take care of the kids? The man who killed her? Or relatives who have their own families to worry about?”

Agu also warned against societal pressure, emphasizing that rushing into marriage without proper consideration is a potential recipe for disaster.

“You say, ‘My mates are all married, but I’m still single.’ See you, see death.
“She’s beautiful, he’s handsome, so I must marry them? See you, see death.
“Always do your background checks before proceeding with marriage.”

Opinion: A Message Many Need to Hear

Agu’s statement is one that many in Nigerian society—and beyond—should take seriously. In a culture where marriage is often seen as a major milestone, many people rush into it without truly knowing their partner. Worse still, some endure toxic relationships for fear of societal judgment.

His advice is particularly timely and necessary, especially considering the rising cases of domestic violence. Too often, we hear tragic stories of individuals losing their lives in abusive marriages simply because they ignored red flags.

While marriage remains a beautiful institution, Agu reminds us that choosing the right partner is more important than just being married.
