Luis Rubiales Defends World Cup Kiss in Court, But Controversy Remains

Luis Rubiales Defends World Cup Kiss in Court, But Controversy Remains

Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has told a Madrid court that Jenni Hermoso gave him permission to kiss her after Spain’s triumph in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final.

Rubiales, who is facing sexual assault charges, claimed the kiss was a spontaneous gesture of celebration, insisting, "I am absolutely sure that she gave me her permission."

However, Hermoso has repeatedly denied consenting to the kiss, maintaining that it was unwanted and inappropriate.

A Scandal That Shook Spanish Football

Rubiales’ legal troubles don’t end with the kiss. Three other officials—former national team coach Jorge Vilda, former sports director Albert Luque, and former marketing head Rubén Rivera—are also facing charges. They are accused of coercing Hermoso to publicly support Rubiales' version of events in an attempt to downplay the controversy.

The scandal led to Rubiales' resignation three weeks later, and FIFA handed him a three-year ban from football.

Rubiales’ Justification: A Weak Defense?

In court, Rubiales tried to justify his actions by likening the kiss to how he greets his daughters on New Year’s Eve. But comparing a moment of personal family affection to a public, professional setting only raises more concerns about his understanding of boundaries and respect.

This case is about more than just a kiss; it’s about power, consent, and accountability in sports. The fact that an official of Rubiales' stature is defending his actions instead of acknowledging the harm only reinforces the cultural challenges women still face in professional football.

With the trial underway, the football world watches closely. Will this case set a precedent for player protection and respect in sports, or will it expose further loopholes in how misconduct is handled? One thing is clear—this is bigger than Rubiales, and its outcome could shape the future of women's football.
