Paul Merson Declares Arsenal’s Title Hopes Over After West Ham Defeat

Paul Merson Declares Arsenal’s Title Hopes Over After West Ham Defeat

Arsenal’s Premier League title dreams have been crushed, according to club legend Paul Merson, following their shocking 1-0 loss to West Ham at the Emirates.

A 44th-minute header from Jarrod Bowen proved decisive, leaving the Gunners eight points behind leaders Liverpool with the same number of matches played. With Liverpool set to face Manchester City next, the gap could widen even further.

Merson: "Arsenal Have No Chance"

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson was brutally honest about Arsenal’s slim chances of lifting the trophy this season:

“The title race is over, one million per cent. Arsenal cannot catch Liverpool. They’ve got no forward. There’s absolutely no chance Arsenal can win the league. Even if Liverpool get beaten 7-0 by Man City, Arsenal still cannot win it.”

Merson also pointed to Arsenal’s lack of attacking firepower, claiming their current squad lacks the depth and quality to sustain a title challenge:

“They’ve got a young 17-year-old in Nwaneri, who has a bright future, but he struggled today. Trossard is a bit-part player, in my opinion. They’ve got nothing upfront. They are toothless.”

A Harsh Reality Check for Arsenal?

Mikel Arteta’s men have been among the title contenders for most of the season, but this defeat raises serious doubts about their ability to keep up with Liverpool and Manchester City.

With 12 games left, Arsenal must not only find consistency but also hope for major slip-ups from their rivals—a scenario that seems unlikely given Liverpool’s ruthless form.

Opinion: Do Arsenal Still Have a Chance?

While Merson’s criticism may feel harsh, it’s hard to ignore Arsenal’s current lack of cutting edge in attack. The Gunners failed to score at home, and without a prolific goal scorer leading the line, they could struggle to keep pace in the title race.

However, football is unpredictable, and a strong run of results could still put them back in contention. But as it stands, Arsenal’s dreams of ending their 20-year wait for a Premier League title appear to be slipping away.

What do you think? Is Arsenal’s title race truly over, or can they bounce back? ⚽👇
