Comedian Igosave Calls for Investigation Into Telecom Companies Over Data Tariff Hikes

Comedian Igosave Calls for Investigation Into Telecom Companies Over Data Tariff Hikes

Nigerian comedian Otaghware Onodjayeke, popularly known as Igosave, has called on the authorities to investigate the activities of telecommunication companies, alleging that they are exploiting Nigerians through excessive data charges and poor service delivery.

In a viral video shared on his social media, the comedian, who is currently in the United Kingdom (UK), expressed shock over the stark difference between data services in Nigeria and abroad.

“This is the third time I have gone to my service provider in the UK to top up my phone, and they told me I still have data left,” he said. “I bought just 20GB three weeks ago, and it’s still working—very fast! But in Nigeria, a 50GB monthly subscription barely lasts three days!"

Calls for Government Action

Igosave urged the Nigerian government, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to probe Internet providers over their alleged exploitative billing systems.

He further criticized Nigeria’s high data costs, questioning why telecom companies charge so much in a country where the minimum wage remains low.

Opinion: Are Nigerians Being Exploited?

His concerns reflect the frustrations of millions of Nigerians who complain about expensive, unreliable Internet despite telecom providers raking in billions from data subscriptions. With the recent hike in tariffs, many are beginning to wonder—is it a case of poor regulation, corporate greed, or both?

Should the government intervene and regulate data pricing more strictly? Or should Nigerians start demanding better service from telecom companies?
