Eric Chelle Opens Up on Super Eagles Appointment: “I Applied Like Any Other Coach”
In a rare blend of humility and professionalism, newly appointed Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has spoken candidly about how he secured one of the most high-profile jobs in African football.
Chelle, 47, a former Mali national team boss, was named Nigeria’s first-ever African substantive coach in January by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) — a decision that came as a surprise to many, especially given the list of well-known European coaches previously linked to the role.
Speaking with CANAL+SPORT Afrique, Chelle cleared the air on speculations surrounding his appointment.
“When I left the Malian team, there was a call for applications from the NFF, and so I applied like any other coach,” Chelle revealed.
“Then the interview came. I was invited to a coaches’ conference where I presented my project, vision, and philosophy.”
He went on to explain that though he had moved on to another coaching opportunity at French side Rouen, the chance to lead Nigeria’s national team was too significant to ignore.
“I thought it would happen much faster, but due to some events, I had to wait… So I left for Rouen, but then it’s true that I had this opportunity, which I risked losing. So I returned, for this great project.”
💬 Opinion: A Fresh Era for Nigeria, A Big Moment for African Coaches
Eric Chelle’s journey to the top job in Nigerian football isn't just refreshing — it’s symbolic.
For decades, African nations have too often looked outside the continent for coaching talent, sidelining homegrown managers who possess the cultural understanding, tactical awareness, and drive to succeed. Chelle’s appointment marks a shift in mindset and opens the door for other competent African coaches to be trusted with the continent’s biggest footballing responsibilities.
His selection based on a transparent application process — rather than big names or lobbying — also sets a new standard of meritocracy in Nigerian football governance.
Now, the focus turns to the pitch. Will Chelle's “project, vision, and philosophy” translate into the kind of results Nigerians have been yearning for?
Only time will tell. But for now, one thing is clear: Eric Chelle didn’t just take the Super Eagles job — he earned it.
