“Gen Z Parenting Needs Balance”: Chinyere Wilfred Speaks on Broken Homes and Lessons from ‘Sands of Time’

Veteran Nollywood actress Chinyere Wilfred is using both her on-screen role and real-life wisdom to spotlight a conversation many have avoided for too long: the increasing rate of broken homes and the shifting dynamics of modern parenting in the Gen Z era.

In an exclusive interview with The Nation, Wilfred reflected on her character “Mama Bomboy” in the TV series Sands of Time and how it reshaped her outlook on motherhood.

“I realised I was overreacting with my children… I thought I was protecting them, but I was overprotecting them,” she shared.

Married for over 30 years, Wilfred expressed concern over the speed at which modern marriages are crumbling, blaming it partly on the erosion of traditional values and an “everything-now” Gen Z mentality.

“You buy aso ebi and before you blink, they’ve broken up,” she said.
“Our parents weren’t like this. They raised us with structure. Today’s parenting is too soft, too reactive, too online.”

💬 Opinion: Bridging the Generational Gap — Not Breaking It

Chinyere Wilfred’s message isn’t one of condemnation — it’s a call for balance.

While the world is evolving and Gen Z has introduced fresh perspectives on freedom, mental health, and identity, there’s value in preserving discipline, patience, and mutual respect — virtues that have anchored African homes for generations.

Wilfred’s confession that even she had to reassess her parenting shows growth is not just for the young. Her reflections prove that tradition and modernity can coexist — if both sides are willing to listen, reflect, and adjust.

🎥 Sands of Time — More Than Just a Drama

Beyond its entertainment value, Sands of Time is shaping up to be a cultural mirror, urging African families — especially mothers and fathers — to reflect on how love, control, and communication are handled in the home.

“It’s time to listen more and loosen up,” Wilfred says. And perhaps, that's the message many homes need right now.
