Obinna Akuchie Joins Rivers United Ahead of NPFL and CAF Champions League Campaign

Obinna Akuchie Joins Rivers United Ahead of NPFL and CAF Champions League Campaign

Rivers United have added firepower to their goalkeeping unit with the signing of Obinna Akuchie from newly promoted Kun Khalifat FC, as preparations ramp up for both the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season and the CAF Champions League.

Akuchie’s arrival comes shortly after Rivers United also sealed a deal for former Enyimba and Super Eagles goalkeeper, John Noble, signaling coach Finidi George’s intent to build depth and competition in the goalkeeping department.

🧱 A Trusted Wall Between the Sticks

Akuchie was instrumental in Kun Khalifat’s historic promotion to the NPFL and brings valuable experience from his days with the now-defunct Vandrezzer FC in Uyo. Known for his reflexes, composure under pressure, and leadership, the young shot-stopper will look to make his mark at a club hungry for silverware.

🧠 Opinion: Rivers United Are Doing Their Homework

Rivers United are clearly not taking any chances. With continental football on the horizon, strengthening the squad — especially in goal — is a smart move. Finidi George, fresh off his national team coaching duties, seems determined to blend experience with rising talent, and Akuchie fits that mold perfectly.

With a strong mix of local and CAF ambitions, this is a team that means business.

📣 Rivers fans, is Akuchie the right signing for your CAF and league ambitions? How far can the Pride of Rivers go next season?
