Yul Edochie Says Nigeria’s Next President Should Come from Southeast

Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has sparked fresh political conversation after declaring that Nigeria’s next president should emerge from the Southeast, in the spirit of fairness and equity.

The actor, who has publicly supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, made the statement in a video shared on his social media page on Sunday, July 21.

🗣️ “In the spirit of fairness and equity, I strongly believe that the next President of Nigeria should come from the Southeast,” he said.

Yul’s comments add to ongoing national discourse about zoning and power rotation, a sensitive but vital topic in Nigeria's political structure.

🔎 Context:

  • The Southeast region, dominated by the Igbo ethnic group, has not produced a democratically elected president since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999.

  • There have been repeated calls from political figures, civil society groups, and youth movements for the Southeast to be given a fair chance in the country’s highest office.

✍️ Opinion Corner

Yul Edochie’s stance is both bold and timely. Nigeria’s unity thrives when all regions feel represented at the center. While support for a sitting president is one thing, advocating for inclusion is another mark of true patriotism.

If Nigeria wants to strengthen its democracy and national cohesion, it may be time to give the Southeast its due place in Aso Rock.

Do you agree with Yul Edochie’s opinion?
