Chuba Akpom Reiterates Desire to Play for Super Eagles, But Will Nigeria Call?
Ajax striker Chuba Akpom has once again expressed his desire to represent Nigeria's Super Eagles, years after switching his international allegiance from England.
The 29-year-old forward, who was born in London to Nigerian parents, previously featured for England at youth level but remains eligible to play for Nigeria at senior level.
Akpom, an Arsenal academy graduate, officially switched his international allegiance to Nigeria in 2019. However, despite his decision, he has yet to receive an invitation to join the three-time African champions.
Speaking in an interview with Oma Sports, Akpom admitted that the wait has been long but remains hopeful:
“I try to give 100%. I’ve been waiting since 2019. I switched allegiances a long time ago, but if it happens, it happens. I’ll just keep working hard.”
He also dismissed the common belief that players only switch allegiance to Nigeria after failing to get an England call-up.
“It’s not that the players are switching over because they can’t play for England, it’s just that they’ve not had the opportunity to play for Nigeria from a young age. They play in England and go through the youth system there.”
Why Has Nigeria Overlooked Akpom?
Akpom has had an impressive club career, particularly during his time at Middlesbrough, where he won the EFL Championship Player of the Year award in 2023 after scoring 28 goals in 38 league appearances.
His performances earned him a €12 million move to Ajax, but he has struggled for consistent game time in the Eredivisie.
Despite this, Akpom is a versatile and experienced striker who could provide depth and competition to the Super Eagles’ attacking options, especially with Victor Osimhen and Taiwo Awoniyi dealing with fitness concerns.
Opinion: Should Akpom Get a Chance?
With Nigeria struggling in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, should the NFF and Super Eagles coach give Akpom a chance?
✅ Experience – Having played in top European leagues, Akpom brings valuable experience.
✅ Versatility – He can play as a striker, second forward, or attacking midfielder.
✅ Determination – His passion for Nigeria is clear, as he’s waited five years for an opportunity.
However, with Nigeria boasting strikers like Osimhen, Terem Moffi, Paul Onuachu, and Gift Orban, the competition is fierce.
What do you think?
🔹 Should Chuba Akpom finally get his Super Eagles debut?
🔹 Does he have what it takes to compete with Nigeria’s current strikers?
