Chuba Akpom Scores on Ligue 1 Debut – Can He Be Lille’s Game-Changer?

Lille’s new signing, Chuba Akpom, wasted no time in announcing himself in Ligue 1, scoring on his debut despite his side’s 2-1 loss to Le Havre at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Saturday night.

The 29-year-old striker made history as only the fourth Nigerian to score on his Ligue 1 debut, joining an elite group that includes Moses Simon, Victor Osimhen, and Terem Moffi. While the defeat was disappointing for Lille, Akpom’s goal was a clear positive, showcasing his instincts and ability to make an impact.

Lille manager Bruno Genesio acknowledged Akpom’s bright start but urged him to keep pushing to fully integrate into the team.

“Scoring is always a good sign for a striker. Chuba was opportunistic in this action. He is a player who still has to find his feet with us,” Genesio said. “He still has to assimilate certain principles and what is asked of him here. It is good that he scored, it can only increase his confidence and bring us something extra for the end of the season.”

Akpom arrived at Lille with a solid reputation after an incredible goal-scoring season with Middlesbrough, where he finished as the top scorer in the English Championship. However, Ligue 1 presents a different challenge, and Genesio’s words suggest that the club expects more from him beyond just goals—tactical awareness, link-up play, and overall team contribution.

If Akpom can quickly adapt to Lille’s system and build strong chemistry with his teammates, he could be a key figure in the club’s push for European qualification. His goal-scoring ability is evident, but consistency and tactical discipline will determine whether he becomes a leading man or just another good signing.
