Flying Eagles Drawn in Tough Group for 2025 U-20 AFCON

Flying Eagles Drawn in Tough Group for 2025 U-20 AFCON

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been handed a challenging draw for the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they will battle Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa in Group B.

The seven-time champions, led by Aliyu Zubairu, will need to dig deep to navigate their way out of a group filled with football powerhouses.

Nigeria will reignite their rivalry with Egypt, a team they narrowly defeated 1-0 in the last edition’s group stage. They will also face the North Africans in a double-header friendly later this month, which could serve as a preview of what’s to come.

Morocco, a rising force in African football, and South Africa, known for their technical style of play, will provide stern opposition in the battle for a knockout stage spot.

Other Group Fixtures

  • Hosts Cote d’Ivoire will compete in Group A alongside DR Congo, Ghana, Tanzania, and a yet-to-be-decided Central African representative.

  • Defending champions Senegal lead Group C, where they will face Zambia, Kenya, and Sierra Leone.

The tournament will take place in Cote d’Ivoire from April 26 to May 18, 2025.

Opinion: Can the Flying Eagles Rise to the Occasion?

Nigeria’s rich history in youth football means expectations will be high, but Group B poses a serious test. Egypt and Morocco’s tactical discipline and South Africa’s speed and flair will require the Flying Eagles to be at their very best.

However, Nigeria’s dominance at this level, coupled with the experience of coach Aliyu Zubairu, gives them a fighting chance. If they stay organized, clinical in attack, and mentally tough, they can emerge from the group and chase their eighth AFCON U-20 title.
