Flying Eagles Boss Zubairu Unfazed by Tough AFCON Draw

Flying Eagles Boss Zubairu Unfazed by Tough AFCON Draw

Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu, remains confident despite Nigeria being placed in a challenging group for the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The draw sees Nigeria pitted against three of Africa’s strongest youth teams—Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa—each boasting a rich history in youth football. However, Zubairu insists his team is ready for the challenge.

“It’s a very good draw. If a team truly aspires to reach the FIFA World Cup, there is no need to shy away from any opponent. Facing Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa at this stage presents a tremendous opportunity,” Zubairu told thenff.com.

He also dismissed the idea that Nigeria has landed in a "group of death," emphasizing that success in African football is all about preparation, not reputation.

“We need to dispel the notion that this is a ‘group of death,’” he added.

“In African football, there are no small teams anymore. The key is to prepare very well. A lesser-known nation can surprise everyone if they come prepared.”

The 2025 U-20 AFCON, scheduled to take place in Côte d’Ivoire from April 26 to May 18, will determine Africa’s representatives at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Opinion: Is This the True Test of the Flying Eagles?

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have always been a dominant force in African youth football, but this draw is a serious test of their strength. Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa are no pushovers, and each of these teams will be hungry to make a statement.

That said, Zubairu’s confidence is refreshing. Instead of fearing the competition, he sees it as an opportunity—a mindset that champions embrace. If the Flying Eagles want to be among the best, they must beat the best.

The real question now is: will Nigeria’s preparation match its ambition? The next few months will be crucial as the team fine-tunes tactics, strengthens squad depth, and builds chemistry. Fans will be eager to see if the Flying Eagles can turn this challenge into a triumph.

Can they rise to the occasion and prove they belong at the top? Only time will tell.
