Jorge Jesus: Portugal Doesn’t Value Cristiano Ronaldo Enough
Al-Hilal manager Jorge Jesus has claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo is not fully appreciated in his home country, Portugal, despite his massive global influence.
Since making a high-profile move to Al-Nassr in 2022, Ronaldo has been instrumental in boosting the Saudi Pro League’s popularity. His goal-scoring exploits have led his team to multiple title challenges, though they have fallen short against rivals Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad.
Despite his on-field brilliance and unmatched global appeal, Jesus believes Portugal does not give Ronaldo the recognition he deserves, especially compared to Saudi Arabia.
“The first time I arrived here, they knew Ronaldo, not Portugal,” Jesus told Channel 11.
“The billboards in the middle of the city were just Ronaldo, and that was six years ago. In Portugal, they don’t value him much for the image he brings.”
Ronaldo: A Global Phenomenon
Saudi Arabia has embraced Ronaldo as the face of their football revolution, making him the highest-paid athlete in the world with a record-breaking contract. His presence has also attracted top stars like Neymar, Benzema, and Sadio Mané to the Middle East.
Opinion: Does Portugal Take Ronaldo for Granted?
While Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time top scorer and biggest football icon, some argue that his legacy is undervalued back home. Unlike Saudi Arabia, where he is a national treasure, Portugal has at times been divided over his influence, particularly in international tournaments.
However, with five Ballon d’Ors, a European Championship, and countless records, Ronaldo’s impact is undeniable.
