U.S. Appeal Court Upholds R. Kelly’s 30-Year Sentence for Sex Crimes

U.S. Appeal Court Upholds R. Kelly’s 30-Year Sentence for Sex Crimes

A federal appeals court in Manhattan has upheld R. Kelly’s 30-year prison sentence, affirming his racketeering and sex trafficking convictions.

The embattled R&B singer, who was convicted in 2021, had argued that prosecutors failed to prove he established a racketeering scheme to recruit underage girls for sexual abuse. However, the three-judge panel dismissed his claim, ruling that evidence clearly showed he used his fame and network of managers and assistants to exploit young women over a 25-year period.

"Kelly exploited his fame to lure ladies and young women into his grasp. He would isolate victims from friends and family, control every aspect of their lives, and abuse them physically, sexually, and verbally," the court stated.

Legal Battle Continues

In 2022, R. Kelly received an additional 20-year sentence for child sex abuse charges in Chicago, bringing his total prison term to 50 years.

Despite the latest setback, his attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, has vowed to appeal the case at the U.S. Supreme Court.
