Manchester United Youngster Chido Obi-Martin Drops 'Martin' from His Name

Manchester United Youngster Chido Obi-Martin Drops 'Martin' from His Name

Manchester United’s promising young forward, Chido Obi-Martin, has officially changed his name to Chido Obi, according to SportBible.

The club has honored his request, updating his name on their official website. While the reason behind the name change remains undisclosed, the Denmark youth international—who is of Nigerian descent—will now be recognized without "Martin" attached to his surname.

A Rising Star in Manchester

Obi joined Manchester United from Arsenal in October 2024 after his schoolboy contract with the Gunners expired. He had an outstanding record at Arsenal, scoring 32 goals and providing three assists in just 21 games for their U-18 side.

Since making the switch to Old Trafford, the teenage sensation has continued his impressive form, netting 12 goals and registering one assist in nine games for United’s youth setup.

U18s manager Adam Lawrence has praised the youngster’s development, particularly his ability to combine goal-scoring instincts with intelligent link-up play.

“He wants to score goals and get himself into those positions, but I was really pleased with him just in terms of his link-up play — not just stretching and running in behind but recognizing when to show into feet, how to use his body to shield the ball, and when to bring others into play,” Lawrence told SportBible.

With such performances, Chido Obi is making a strong case for a future spot in Erik ten Hag’s senior squad.

Opinion: A Name Change, But the Same Bright Future

While the name change is an interesting development, it does not change the fact that Chido Obi is one of the most exciting young talents at Manchester United. At just 17, his goal-scoring record speaks for itself, and his ability to adapt quickly to new environments suggests he has the mentality to succeed at the highest level.

For United fans, the big question is: when will Obi get his first-team debut? With the club currently looking for attacking reinforcements, his rapid rise could see him knocking on the senior team’s door sooner than expected.

Will he be the next breakthrough star at Old Trafford? Time will tell, but all signs point to a bright future for Chido Obi.
