Lamine Yamal Addresses Refereeing Controversy in Spain: "Big Clubs Can't Complain"

Lamine Yamal Addresses Refereeing Controversy in Spain: "Big Clubs Can't Complain"

Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal has weighed in on the ongoing refereeing debates in Spanish football, stating that the country’s biggest clubs—Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atlético Madrid—have little reason to complain about officiating.

At just 17, the La Masia graduate has already won major honors, including the Euro 2024 with Spain, La Liga, and the Spanish Super Cup. Now, he is making headlines off the pitch with his candid views on refereeing decisions that have often sparked controversy in LaLiga.

Yamal: "Referees Try to Do Their Best"

In an exclusive interview with Mundo Deportivo, Yamal acknowledged that some decisions have favored Real Madrid in certain games but believes that referees in Spain are doing their best in a difficult job.

"When we were six points behind, I remember the penalty on Jules (Koundé) at Getafe, which they didn’t call, and then yesterday they did call that penalty on Iñigo," Yamal said.

"In the Copa del Rey, the referees first favored Madrid, and then against Osasuna, they say they were against them. It’s going to be like that every matchday. I don’t think we can complain—Madrid, Barça, and Atlético."

He further emphasized that controversial calls happen in every league, but they tend to attract more attention when they involve Spain’s biggest teams.

"There isn’t as much talk about games like the ones against Alavés and Leganés, where there are probably more controversial decisions. But the referees try to do their best. It’s a very difficult job because someone will always complain. We are very happy."

A Mature Take from a Young Star

Yamal’s comments reflect a level of maturity beyond his years. Instead of fueling the rivalry-driven debate on refereeing bias, he takes a balanced view, acknowledging both the mistakes and the challenges referees face. His perspective contrasts with the usual heated responses from players, managers, and fans when key decisions go against their teams.

With Barcelona and Real Madrid currently tied on 51 points in LaLiga, every decision in the title race will be scrutinized even further. Whether Yamal’s words will help cool tensions or add to the debate remains to be seen. But one thing is certain—this young star is already showing leadership qualities both on and off the pitch.
