Ime Okon Explains Why He Chose South Africa Over Nigeria
Rising defender Ime Okon has officially pledged his international future to South Africa, ending speculation over whether the 20-year-old would represent Nigeria, his father’s homeland.
Okon, who made his debut for Bafana Bafana at the 2025 COSAFA Cup, said the decision wasn’t difficult — despite being eligible for two of Africa’s biggest footballing nations.
“It was never a difficult decision to choose which nation to represent,” he told SABC Sports.
“This is what I’ve always wanted. I’m really happy… the players and coaches have been welcoming.”
⚽ A Tale of Two Homes: Naija Blood, Mzansi Roots
Born in Johannesburg to a South African mother and Nigerian father, Okon has lived most of his life in South Africa and came through their local development system. While many Nigerian fans had hoped the centre-back would follow in the footsteps of William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey, who chose Nigeria despite foreign ties, Okon has now shut that door — for good.
💭 OPINION: No Love Lost — And No Blame Either
Football fans often see national allegiance as a matter of loyalty, but in truth, it's deeply personal. Okon chose the nation that nurtured his talent, gave him first-team exposure, and made him feel at home. And that deserves respect, not resentment.
For Nigeria, it’s a minor miss — but not a tragedy.
For South Africa, it’s a win — and a chance to build a more defensively solid future.
Nigeria’s talent pool remains deep, especially in defence, while Okon’s decision shows how much South Africa’s national program is evolving and becoming more attractive to dual-heritage stars.
🔍 What’s Next for Okon?
If his COSAFA Cup performances are anything to go by, Okon could become a mainstay in Bafana Bafana’s defence ahead of the 2026 AFCON qualifiers and World Cup push.
