NFF Shuts Down Reports of Chukwuemeka and Ugochukwu's Switch to Nigeria
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed reports that Chelsea midfielders Carney Chukwuemeka and Lesley Ugochukwu have applied to FIFA for a switch of international allegiance to play for the Super Eagles.
Amid widespread speculation that the duo are seeking to join Nigeria’s squad ahead of the March 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda, the NFF has labelled the reports as false.
NFF’s Official Response
Responding to the rumors, BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji shared the NFF’s stance via X (formerly Twitter):
“A top NFF official has denied reports that Carney Chukwuemeka and Lesley Ugochukwu have submitted their papers for a switch of nationality to represent Nigeria.”
The official further clarified that only a national football federation can apply for a player's switch, not the players themselves, making the circulating news inaccurate.
Still a Possibility?
Both Chukwuemeka (England U-21) and Ugochukwu (France U-19) are eligible to play for Nigeria through their heritage. With the Super Eagles undergoing a new phase under recently appointed head coach Eric Chelle, speculation remains high over potential call-ups.
While neither player has publicly expressed interest in switching allegiance, Nigeria has seen a wave of dual-national players commit in recent years, including Ademola Lookman, Calvin Bassey, and Alex Iwobi.
Final Thoughts
The ball is now in the NFF’s court. If Nigeria genuinely wants Chukwuemeka and Ugochukwu, they must engage the players directly and initiate the FIFA process.
